A Visit from Ebony & Ivory

'Twas the
N
ight of the concert, and all through the house,
The audience sat waiting - there was even a mouse!
The coats were all hung on the back of the chair,
In hopes that the artists soon would be there;
The kids were settled, all snug in their seats,
'Cause after the concert, they'd get some treats.
And mom in her make-up and I in my tux,
Had just settled down for a concert deluxe,
When up on the stage there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my seat, to see what was the matter.
Away to the edge of the stage in a flash
I flew, peeked under the curtains, and gasped!
The lights up above with an eerie, blue glow,
Gave a luster of midday to objects below;
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But four artists preparing to use lots of gear,
With a clarinet, a piano, a bass and some drums,
I knew in a moment, Ebony & Ivory had come.
More rapid than eagles, those artists they came,
And they laughed as they warmed up and I knew their names:
Now Andrew on keyboards and Chris on the bass,
Gordon on drums and Fred with his case
Of clarinets and saxes and other such stuff -
I saw at a glance that they had enough
To give us a concert - oh my, what a treat.
I turned on my heel and went back to my seat.
The curtain arose - Ebony & Ivory was there
Dressed all in fancy from their feet to their hair.
Their eyes, how they twinkled! Their smiles how merry!
The music they started, and good it was - very!
The songs were amazing - these guys were pros.
Goodwill and joy in the audience arose.
The evening flew quickly; we all wanted more,
So Ebony & Ivory gave us an encore!
The concert was over, but as we left the hall
We wanted to say on behalf of us all,
"Thanks for the music this wonderful night,
It gave us such pleasure - it was out of sight!"
And now we can shout it for all folks to hear,
"Bring back these musicians to our town next year!"

(With thanks and apologies to Clement C. Moore)
