Master Classes Encourage Music StudentsEbony & Ivory was privileged to inaugurate the first-ever Master classes held in conjunction with the Old Town Hall Concert Series in Hilton Beach. The classes were open to any person of any age level or musical ability, and an enthusiastic and curious audience was surprised to discover how friendly and helpful a Master class can be. The insightful comments, encouraging suggestions, and professional "tricks of the trade" resulted in immediate improvements for each participant. Ebony & Ivory provided the masterly advice and guidance that made the Master classes a wonderful success! Ebony & Ivory a "hit" in Hilton BeachA full house repeatedly applauded the performance of two outstanding musicians at the Old Town Hall in Hilton Beach." - The Sault Star, July 25, 2001 The opening concert of the sixth annual Old Town Hall Concerts series in Hilton Beach on St. Joseph Island near Sault Ste. Marie had the audience tapping its toes, swaying to the rhythms and wildly applauding the performance of Ebony & Ivory. Andrew Gilpin introduced each number with a brief, interesting anecdote that delighted the audience and put them in the mood to hear an amazing panorama of musical selections. Opening with their signature tune, Feast, a lively Celtic-sounding dance for clarinet and keyboard, the duo treated everyone in the hall to a veritable banquet, including Andrew's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano at the end of which the audience erupted into prolonged and enthusiastic applause. An Ebony & Ivory concert is noted for the variety of repertoire performed, and this concert was no exception. It included the haunting and nostalgic television theme from the BBC series The Victorian Kitchen Garden, the witty and appealing Poulenc Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Scott Joplin rags for solo piano, a wailing, jaunty clarinet set of Benny Goodman tunes, and Andrew's devilishly difficult arrangement of that perennial favorite, Tico Tico. Ebony & Ivory was indeed a "hit" in Hilton Beach, as they are everywhere they perform!
