Peter Stoll and Andrew Gilpin present Pan Pacific II, a sequel to last year's recital of newer Australian, Canadian and American pieces for clarinet, bass clarinet and piano.

Presented as a free Thursday Noon Series concert at Walter Hall, this one-hour recital starts with the wide-ranging melodic drama of Australian composer Margaret Sutherland's Sonata for clarinet and piano.

The haunting solo for the dark A Clarinet of fellow Aussie Ian Shanahan’s Interlude is then followed by Andrew Gilpin's own jazzy, Gypsy-inspired Sonatina for clarinet in its World Premiere.

After the beautiful Australian Ballade by Miriam Hyde, based on a New Zealand Maori legend, the concert is closed by the blazing virtuosity of Canadian composer Christos Hatzis' Melisma. For unaccompanied clarinet and based on a traditional Greek folk clarinet improvisation, this piece gets wilder and wilder as the clarinet heads through the stratosphere in whirling colours and technical display.
